The anatomy of an Orgasm: Woman

Do you know the origin of the word Clitoris? It’s the Greek word for “key” and understanding the clitoris is the key to understanding a woman’s orgasm. But it’s not the only thing. As much as you want to focus on the clit, don’t forget the entire anatomy of the vulva.  NOTE: vulva is the all encompassing word although most people refer to it as vagina.

An orgasm begins in the head

When most people hear the word sensuality, they think of sex. But by definition, sensuality is pleasing the senses. Women (and most men) will be infinitely more turned on if you begin by seducing their mind. If a woman’s mind is wandering they will not come, no matter how talented you are. Setting the mood is important. Soft lights, enticing music and slow touching, although useful, are not always necessary. By taking a few moments to connect with a woman before jumping into sex, you will really help a woman along her journey to orgasm.

The clitoris is like an iceberg

Sadly, it has only been since 1998 that the full anatomy of the clitoris has been recognized aka discovered. What most people call the clit, is just the tip of the clitoris. The clitoris is a wishbone shaped organ that starts at the nub and branches out past both sides of the vagina.

The average clitoris is about 4 inches. Like an iceberg, the majority of the clitoris is hidden from view. This is where guys have women beat. Unless the woman or her partner is very savvy about women’s anatomy, it’s harder to activate many of the nerve endings. And because the clitoris is mostly inside, it is very difficult for most women to orgasm without external clitoral stimulation.

Women have it better

Sorry guys, but when it comes to orgasms, women have it better. There are 8,000 nerve endings in the clitoris (the whole thing, not just the nub). This is more than double the nerve endings in the glans penis (the head of the penis). These nerve endings lead to over 15,000 other nerve endings. Theoretically, it’s possible to have all areas of the clitoris stimulated and have a massive orgasm unlike anything a male can ever have.

Surprisingly, both men and woman have similar lengths in orgasms. The average male orgasm (not the entire time of ejaculation because that varies based on amount of sperm and not all male orgasms involve ejaculation)  lasts from 5 – 22 seconds and includes about 6-15 contractions.  Woman on the other hand enjoy orgasms in the 20-30 second range with approx  15-30 contractions. Where women have men beat, is the ability to have multiple orgasms.

There are many men that have developed the ability to have multiple orgasms but the biological reasons are different for a woman. Men that typically enjoy multiple orgasms do it by a process of delaying orgasm and redirecting the intensity. Although they experience heightened sensations and enjoy the release of an orgasm, they aren’t the same multiple orgasms that women enjoy.

Women can and do have multiple, intense orgasms. It is not unheard of for a woman to have 15 or more orgasms, one right after the other.

The Clitoris continues to grow

Yes, the clitoris continues to grow throughout the life of a woman. By the time a woman is 32, her clitoris is about 4 times larger than it was when she entered puberty. This is a very good thing, at least as it pertains to the enjoyment for a woman. With a larger clitoris, a woman can be more easily aroused. Since the majority of the clitoris is not easily accessible, a larger clitoris brings it closer to the surface. The clitorises of many women are either set deep inside their vulva or they are angled, thus making it difficult to stimulate. Of course, if their partner is knowledgeable and actively explores the shape of the woman’s clitoris, they will be able to stimulate it even if it is set farther back.

Having a larger clitoris is one of the leading components to the most current theories as to why women in their 40’s have a higher sex drive than their younger counterparts. After all, many women never experience their first orgasms until much later in life… probably because their full clitoris was never being stimulated!

Explore the unseen and you never know what great adventure awaits you

There are so many variables to a woman’s orgasm that the only way to be an expert is to explore. If you are a woman, I highly suggest using your fingers to explore inside you. With exploration, you will find the places inside that feel the best. When you know where the spots are that will make you orgasm quicker you can more easily direct your partner to them. If you are the partner of a woman, take time to explore your woman’s body. As a woman that understands her body, I find it so much easier to make another woman come because I now know the areas that should be stimulated. Remember the entire clitoris is the key, not just the nub. As a man, if you gently explore and are patient with your woman, you will find exactly what makes her have leg shaking, whole body quivering orgasms.

Unicorn Upshot:

With enough patience and exploration, anyone can become an orgasm guru.
